USITT Background USITT was established in 1986 to pursue research and
development into the design and application of more
accurate, reliable and cost-effective sensors and
actuators. USITT is part of the world class Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. Electronics and Computer Science was the first university Electronics Department to be established anywhere in the world and has recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. Currently the Department is ranked fourth world-wide for its academic research in electronic engineering. As part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science, USITT has a commercial role in working with industry to make best use of its expertise and facilities. The Department is one of the largest in the country and has a number of research groups working in sensor related areas, including;
Since its inception USITT has maintained very close
links with industry through its industrial consultancy
service, industry sponsored research, company membership
scheme and one-day colloquia. During this time USITT has
carried out research and consultancy work for companies
such as Ford Motor Company, Lucas, ABB, Siemens, IBM,
Dowty, British Gas, BP, Mars Electronics and Southern
Water. In addition to working with multi-national and
blue-chip companies USITT has worked successfully with
the very many medium and small sized companies that form
